LHC releases two recovered from illegal police custody
The Lahore High Court on Saturday released two brothers, Amanat Ali and Shafqat, who were recovered from illegal custody of Hafizabad police. The court directed the district police officer (DPO) in Hafizabad to take action against the police officials concerned, including DSP Shaukat Ali Joya, and report to the court within 15 days. The court issued these orders on a habeas corpus petition by a widow, Sharifan Bibi, seeking release of her sons from the illegal custody of Hafizabad police. She said that no case was registered against them and police also did not produce them before any court. The court deputed a bailiff who recovered the men and produced them before the court. The bailiff stated that their arrest was not mentioned in the police record nor any case was registered against them. The men told the court that DSP Shaukat Ali Joya arrested them from their house and tortured them. The court directed the court bailiff to get the men medically examined and the medical report should be handed over to the DPO. staff report
