farazATTOCK:  The legendary Urdu poet, Ahmed Faraz  passed away here on Monday. He was suffering from kidney disease and recently returned home from the United States where he fell ill.

Ahmed Faraz was considered one of the best poets in the country.

He was born in Nowshera on January 14, 1931.

Faraz was his pen name ‘takhallus’, whereas his real name was Syed Ahmed Shah.

Pashto-speaking Ahmed Faraz learned and studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University where he also taught later.

Outspoken on political issues, he went into

self-exile during the Zia-ul-Haq era. He was also arrested during that period for reciting poems critical of the military rule.

He stayed for three years in Britain, Canada and Europe before returning to Pakistan.

He had also served as Chairman Academy of Letters, and chairperson of the Islamabad-based National Book Foundation for several years.

He was presentd many national and international awards.

He was inspired by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Pakistan People’s Party.

He was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2004, in recognition of his literary achievements.

However, he critised the government of the day and its policies and returned the award in 2006.

Maintaining a tradition established by his mentor, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, he wrote excellent poetry in exile.

His famous work of resistance was “Mahasara”.
One of his famous ghazals was Ranjish Hi Sahi. He had written 13 books.

The news of his death spread in the city like a fire and saddened the people. Faraz had also been fighting against dictatorial regimes.

Khali hathoun kou kabhe ghour say daikha hai faraz

Kis tarah loug lakeeroun say nikal jatay hain

Janay walay kou na rokou kay bharam rah jaye

Tum pukaro bhe tou kab us kou thahar jana hai

Sirf yeh soch kar tum say mohabat kartay hain Faraz

Maira tou koi nahin, tumhara tou koi hua

Woh Jis Kay pass rehta tha dostoun ka hajoom

Suna hai Faraz, kal raat ehsas-e-tanhai se mar gaya

Condolence
Ahmed Faraz was a revolutionary poet of subcontinent. His intellectual ideas put into poetry created awareness among the public. He was a man of action too. In june he joined lawyers' rally for restration of deposed judges as a front line soldier. He saw from his death bed fall of military dictator Musharraf. His death is a great national loss. Let us pray to Allah to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give patience and persverence to members of the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
