Former prime minister and Pakistan People's Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has called for the release of party activists arrested for participating in protests in front of the Supreme Court.

In a statement on Sunday, she said the arrested party activists had been kept in prison for several weeks in different parts of the country, which was a manifestation of political vendetta. She particularly mentioned the party activists from Attock, who are incarcerated in the Jhelum district jail for past three weeks. "The continued detention of these activists is unlawful," she said, demanding their immediate release.

Benazir complimented the party workers for refusing to bow before state repression. "Your courage and steadfastness in the face of state repression and adversity is commendable. It is an inspiration to all those fighting for the cause of democracy, independence of judiciary and emancipation of the people from poverty."

The former prime minister also urged the human rights bodies to raise their voice for activists fighting for the independence of judiciary and for their release from jails.

In another statement, Benazir also condemned the manhandling of South Asian News Agency Editor Shakeel Ahmed Turabi, saying the attack on Turabi was an attack on the press freedom. "The PPP is seriously concerned over the regime's attempts to use vigilante groups and thug tactics to silence the opposition," she added.

Recalling the "murder of 42 persons in Karachi on May 12, the disappearances and privatised violence," she said: "Sadly, the present regime is looking similar to Chile under Gen Pinochet's rule."

Benazir called for an inquiry to determine if any intelligence agencies were involved in the attack and if so, which agency. "The PPP wants to know if the ruling PML-Q has set up thug squads to mete out physical punishment to opponents," she added.
