The kingmaker
Of the 23 prime ministers this country has seen, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain is the only ONE who resigned voluntarily after 60 days. At least this is what he has been officially projecting to counter the propaganda that dubbed him as 'Nizaam Saqqa' or 'Halala prime minister', an indigenous
equivalent of a short-time prime minister. The shrewd politician, king of the GT road establishment, shares the aspirations of no less than H.E. President Bush himself -- they both need President Musharraf in uniform for the next many many years.
Though not in good health himself, he is the indisputable king, nay the king-maker. 26 years in active politics have taught him the art of managing people's ambitions to his own advantage. Thus Mushahid Husain does all the talking for him, a cousin rules Punjab, and a brother-in-law rules Attock district who lent his daughter's National Assembly seat to PM Shaukat Aziz.
A wealthy industrialist who does not like the likes of Bhuttos for nationalising his family enterprise, he's learnt the lesson. At least half of his family scions are in politics now while doing their business alongside.
He has also learnt some other lessons. He's equally comfortable with the religious fundamentalism of Ziaul Haq and Musharraf's 'enlightened moderation'.
'Pakistan Army is always right' is the moral of Chaudhry Shujaat's story.
