ATTOCK: Senior television journalist Khalil Malik was shot dead on Wednesday morning allegedly by his wife, who then reportedly killed herself, police have said.
Personnel of a Rescue 15 team recovered the bodies of Malik and his wife Saira, who was also a television journalist, from their suite at the PHA flats in G-8/4. Police seized a 30-bore pistol. Police said they responded to a phone call from Malik’s servant Obaidur Rehman who reported hearing gunshots from the couple’s bedroom at around 10am.
Rescue 15 Inspector Musarrat Ali Khan said that on reaching the crime scene, the police found the bedroom door locked from the inside. The door was broken down and the bodies were found lying in a pool of blood. Police sources said Malik died of bullet wounds to his chest and Saira died of bullet injuries to her head.
Quarrelling: Khan said the couple had been quarrelling for many months. Saira’s office colleagues agreed the couple’s relationship had been in trouble for quite some time, and according to Malik’s brother Khushnood Ali Khan, Saira had become Malik’s ex-wife in a recent divorce. Station House Officer of the Margalla Police Station Naeem Iqbal said that Saira had told him previously that her husband used to beat her. “I told her that unless she filed a written complaint, the police could not interfere,” he said.
Officials said Malik’s body was dispatched to Talagang for burial following an autopsy, while that of his wife was being sent to her ancestral village of Shika in Attock for a post-mortem. The marriage was Malik’s third, television channels reported. They also reported that Saira had once threatened to jump from the apartment following a row but friends of the couple had reconciled. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik ordered the Islamabad IGP to form a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, asking to see the initial report within 24 hours.
