Why Democracy does not seem to be working in Pakistan?

The question arises why democracy worked in India and not in Pakistan? And the answer lies in a simple sentence. The one and only one difference in Pakistan and India is the existence of the feudal system. In India, big states with worldly nawabs and rajas vanished like ‘harf e ghalt’ and India became the worlds’ largest democratic country. In Pakistan, small and average size landlords become big time nawabs and chowdris through basic democracy and Parliments. They flourished in the Pakistani style democracy and poor masses became more miserable than ‘achhoots’ of India. The educated class of Pakistan has become hopeless and stopped waiting for the ‘subah’ for which Faiz Ahmad Faiz dreamed of.

Why Democracy does not seem to be working in Pakistan?

MEER BHEE KEYA SADA HAN, BEMAR HOOAY JIS KE SABAB

USSEE ATTAR KE LAUNDE SE DAVA MANGTE HAN

A great columnist Javed Chowdri of Daily Express wrote a column in which he mentioned a Brig. Sb who was a great critic of General Mosharraf . The same Birg.Sb is very upset about the affairs of current government. He cited a number of very important appointments that have been given to established corrupt persons. Chowdry Sb tried to defend current government and seems like he has great hopes from current establishment under the auspices of Zardari and Sharif. I wonder about the foresight and memory of Chowdri Sb. Can he be that naïve or ‘sada’ in the words of Mir Taqi Mir. Who can in his right state of mind, can expect any good from people like Zardari and Sharif. It was the blunders of these persons that brought country to such a state that a military dictator has to intervene. They have now become the great defenders of the rule of law and the Supreme Court. They are the ones who abused the power and did the shameful act of dishonoring the great office of the Chief Justice of Supreme Court.  With time, people do change; learn the lessons of blunders of their successors. But our political history does not provide any such example. If we do believe that Sharif and Zardari are on the way of redemption but we don’t see any signs as such. Our political history is full of personal interests, vendettas, ‘man man’, and ‘firaoniyat’.

People of Pakistan did not elect Zardari and Sharif as their true representatives. They only voted against the policies of ex-government, they did not have another choice. Our religious parties have already disappointed them. Most of the voters of Pakistan, the poor masses have no voice of their own. The ever-shrinking middle class of Pakistan is totally disappointed from the political future.

Pakistanis living abroad seriously doubt about the utility of democracy in Pakistan. They also think that Musharraf’ s government failed only because of its democratic wing. They think that the true solution for our country is a dictatorship. We need a dictator who is truthful, honest, ‘Pakistan keliay dard e dil rakhta ho’, and a big time reformer.

Then question arises why democracy worked in India and not in Pakistan?

The idea of an honest dictator seems like an extreme and idealistic. In one of his column, Chowdri Sb floated the idea of establishing another political party of educated middle Pakistanis. But it should be found out why Imran Khan’s party is not winning any success yet. Also MQM was made on the premise of same educated urban people and non-feudal leaders. But what happened, Iltaf Hussein has become the big landlord of all the urban areas of Sindh.

The journey for a true change in Pakistan starts with abolishing of the feudal system, the root cause of all ills. I urge Javed Chowdri, Hassan Nissar, Hamid Mir and other respectable journalists to hold a seminar in Pakistan on the question of what is the root cause of a number of unsuccessful attempts of a democratic change? If feudalism is found out to be the obvious reason, then how can it be uprooted?
