Central Punjab produced great freedom fighters like Dhullah Bhatti, Dillo Khan Gondal and Ahmed Khan Kharal. Former lived during the time of Mughal Empire and fought for the rights of the poor. He remained unfazed and continued defiant activities against the cruel rulers. Authorities held him notorious. He looted wealthy landlords and Imperial officers and distributed the booty amongst the poor and needy. He enjoyed huge popularity among poor Hindus and Muslims in the area alike. He lived in jungles and protected honor of his tribesmen. Distressed and oppressed regarded him as father figure. He became a living embodiment of chivalrous and secular, socio cultural character of the region. He embraced Shahadat in a battle against the rulers.

Dillo Khan Gondal belonged to Gondal Bar that falls in districts Mandi Bahauddin and Sargodha. He united tribes of the area including Sikhs of Mangat and defended them against hordes of invaders from Afghanistan, Central Asia and Persia who entered through Khyber Pass for loot, pilferage and plunder. No invader was allowed passage through Gondal bar. Once Nadir Shah planned to attack Gondal bar but fearing stiff resistance from Gondals, he withdrew and went back to Iran. Thereafter, he followed different route to raid Delhi and never transgressed Gondals, land. Dillo was popular among his tribesmen for protecting their rights. He had organized Panchait system to decide disputes among the people.

Ahmed Khan Kharal was one of the greatest freedom fighters in Indian rebellion of 1857.

He united most of the tribes and fought against the British for liberating the people of the area. He raided Gojera Central Jail and got liberated hundreds of freedom fighters who had participated in Independence War of 1857. He killed Lord Burkely Commissioner of Gojra and was able to make a vast part of the land free from British Raj for three months. He was loved by the people around him for protecting their rights. His efforts for freedom were acknowledged by Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal king. He met martyrdom in a battle with British forces.

In the recent past Ch Zahoor Elahi was another great freedom fighter that extended humanitarian help to the poor and protected their rights. He struggled for changing the lot of his country men and in the process suffered atrocities at the hands of rulers. He continued his noble efforts and never bowed before tyrants. He finally met Shahadat.

Presently Chaudery brothers from Gujrat who are descendants of Ch Zahoor Elahi have deviated from traditions set by freedom fighters of this area. They have been playing a role of courtiers of the rulers instead of fighting for the rights of poor.  With their fair or unfair support, rulers have been prolonging their illegitimate rule. They have dismantled country's institutions, brought function of justice to a stand still, caused shortage of wheat because of their wrong policies, and burdened people with high prices of commodities of daily use. Corruption has increased and government servants don't feel accountable. People find no one to resolve their problems. Consequently country has plunged into deep crises where every citizen is confused and uncertain about his safety and future.

Lawyers' movement gave some hope to people for restoring peace and justice through establishment of democracy and free and strong judiciary but politicians belonging to main stream parties are withholding their support to this movement. Had the parties responded to call of lawyers to boycott upcoming polls, things would have changed for better. I hope Chaudry brothers will give second thought to their present stance, and following the path set by freedom fighters of Central Punjab will support lawyers for better future of the country. Aitizaz Ahsan, another Jat from Gujrat has taken lead to boycott elections. Choudries should not lag behind to follow his example for achieving objectives set for lawyers' movement.
