Dear Editor,

Time will be the final judge, but it seems like Musharraf has made a sincere choice by choosing soldiers’ soldier General Ashfaq Kayani to be the new Chief of the Army Staff.  By what legal authority General Musharraf promoted his successor is a matter of another debate; but it seems, this is the first prudent decision he has made since the successive blunders he had been making since the March 9 decision to suspend the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  Hopefully, Musharraf’s decision will be good for the Army and good for the country.  Musharraf could have chosen one of his bootlickers as his successor, but he chose a professional soldier who dares to say ‘no’.  It also goes to prove, that Pakistani military is still, probably the last, institution left where every Pakistani is welcome to join its ranks and rise to the top; not based on their beginnings, social stature or status, rather on hard work, professionalism, and intellect.
