Thousands of Sikhs to visit Nankana Sahib on Gurpurab
Officials in Pakistan Punjab estimated that more than 15,000 Sikhs are likely to visit the sacred Gurdwara Nankana Sahib from across the globe during November to celebrate the Parkash Divas of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of the Sikhs.
According to the Evacuee Trust Property Board deputy administrator, Syed Faraz Abbas, more than 15,000 Sikhs from India, Afghanistan, Dubai, Iran, Pakistan, Europe, and the Americas would participate in the Gurpurab celebrations. The official stated that the government has made arrangements to help the visiters out in immigration, boarding, lodging and security.
The visiting sangat is scheduled to stay at Nankana Sahib until November 24th, and depart for Punja Sahib, Hassan Abdal, and Dera Sahib, Lahore afterwards. Every year thousands of devotees attend the Parkash Divas celebrations at Nankana Sahib, and also visit the various Gurdwara Sahib across West Punjab and the neighboring states.
Nankana Sahib, also known as Raipur and Rai-Bhoi-di-Talwandi is a small town in the Pakistani province of Punjab with a population of almost 60,000. The town is located about 75 kilometres west of Lahore and is one of the most sacred sites in the Sikh religion.
The town has nine gurdwaras including the Gurdwara Janam Asthan which marks the birth place of Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji. Each of the gurdwaras is related with important events in Guru Nanak Dev Ji's life. Annually, approximately 25,000 Sikh pilgrims visit the town, with about 15,000 gathering during the peak season around the Parkash Divas celebrations.
