| Poor Performance of Parliamentarians |

Parliamentarians as chosen representatives of the people violated mandate given to them and over ran their authority to exercise power in the interest of nation during recently held presidential elections. They, against the wishes and views of people at large, cast their votes in favor of Gen in uniform and elected him president second time and thus perpetuated dictatorship in the country in the name of democracy and continuation of economic policies.
Similarly Central Cabinet passed National Reconciliation Ordinance to give amnesty to corrupt and criminal politicians and dropped against them criminal cases pending in the courts for adjudication. The ordinance further provides exemption to members and politicians against commission of corruption offences and as such it is a worse legislation of discrimination. Motives behind enforcement of the ordinance are clear to public.
People take these steps of the parliamentarians as prejudicial to the integrity and solidarity of the country. They believe their representatives have not done this for the interest of public at large; they did this for pleasing the general who benefited them greatly in form of allotting them land in Islamabad and allowing them to gather loots through all fair and unfair means.
Nawaz and Mst Bhutto committed same malpractices during their respective regimes. They wrote off loans drawn from banks in their names and chums; all appointments were made on their recommendations without merits, ghost employees were shown on payroll of some banks and pay drawn against them on fake signatures were misappropriated. Even Bait-ul-Mal was not spared.
There was a systematic intrusion in the affairs of judiciary. Intelligence agencies were given the task of phone taping and eavesdropping of judges and high profile personalities at massive scale, which is a serious violation of fundamental right of privacy. Extra-judicial killings and detentions of citizens without registration of any case against them was routine.
In case of Mst Bhutto, she held duel offices of Prime Minister and Finance Minister with ulterior motives. She emptied banks and smuggled money to foreign banks for purchase of landed property in European counties. She intruded almost into every institution of the country and destroyed their administration for her own benefits.
Finally nature played its role and they were thrown out of the country for their misdeeds. Criminal cases against them are still pending for want of trials
None of the parliamentarians had a moral courage to check the irregularities committed in national institutions. Rather they became party to corrupt mafia and received their share in the loot with impunity.
Same irregularities are being repeated in the present military regime. The same group of parliamentarians is around the power seat. They are making hay while the sun shines.
They are not concerned with electorate's wellbeing that sent them to assemblies. They have no contact with people of their respective constituencies. People feel subdued and watching the affairs silently. Poor law and order situation coupled with continued military operations in Baluchistan and tribal areas as well as illegal detention of people with no clue of their whereabouts to their relatives has further demoralized the people. Human rights violations are going on unabated. Much trumpeted process of accountability failed to take the culprits to task.
There is another element that appears on the scene when ever military ruler take over the government in a coup. That is strengthening ethnic groups/religious groups like MQM and Sipah-e-Sahaba. Gen Zia was the first to create and organize them to counter democratic forces. This group's basic modes oprandi is to dominate society through adopting terrorism techniques. Killing and torturing innocent citizens are their tactics to achieve their goals like extortion and Bhata. They are well organized and always enjoy backing of generals in army who are mohajirs. This group has made Karachi its main principality where no one dare to even speak against them. Killing and torturing of advocates in recent lawyers' movement and then refusing entry to Chief Justice and Imran Khan in Karachi are the main examples of recent times. Yesterday they were called traitors; today they are considered indispensable for the government.
A state of despondency prevails and no morale and no activism among public are seen. They have lost confidence and hope in political leadership and military rule both. That is why instead of approaching people, the leaders prefer to bow before army generals for power sharing. If this situation continues, the privileged group will suck public to its bone through exploitative means. Rulers should remember that public is foundation of any state and once the public is weak and against ruling class even the strongest leader cannot save edifice of state from dismantling. To maintain balance in society there is a dire need to enforce accountability in ruthless manner. But unfortunately none of the present leaders have that much courage and will to enforce it.
