More than 58, 200 prisoners are languishing in 31 jails of the Punjab against the capacity of 21,027.
According to an official report issued in March, the prisoners included 1,121 juveniles and 698 women. As many as 36,688 men and 949 juveniles are facing trial.
About 6,938 prisoners including 44 women have been convicted. Out of 698 women prisoners, 382 are facing trial and 272 are convicted.
Out of 58, 203 prisoners, 22,174 including 358 women and 314 juveniles have been charged with murder under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The highest number of prisoners (convicted and under-trial) are involved in murder cases.
As many as 3,169 prisoners including 15 woman are robbery accused or convicted. More than 2,967 prisoners including six women have been arrested for murder/suicide attempt. 2,719 prisoners including five women have been arrested for selling drugs. 2,519 prisoners including 180 women have been arrested under the Hudood Ordinance.
The Lahore Central Jail has a capacity of 1,053 prisoners but it houses 3,937 prisoners. The Gujranwala Central Jail has a capacity of 913 but it contains 3,589 prisoners. The Sahiwal Central Jail has 4,175 prisoners against a capacity of 1,750. The Kasur District Jail has 1,798 prisoners but it has capacity of 444. The Lahore District Jail has 4,222 prisoners against a capacity of 1,050. The Sheikhupura District Jail has 2,430 prisoners but it has capacity of 590. The Sialkot District Jail has 2,693 prisoners against a capacity of 722. The Rawalpindi Central Jail contains 5,774 prisoners against a capacity of 1,994. The Attock District Jail has 903 prisoners but it has a capacity of 539. The Gujrat District Jail has 1,360 prisoners against a capacity of 385. The Jehlum District Jail houses 729 prisoners bit it has capacity of 416. The Mundi Bahauddin District Jail has 1,021 prisoners against a capacity of 279. The Chakwal sub-jail has 213 prisoners but it should house only 142 prisoners. The Faisalabad Central Jail has 2,921 prisoners against a capacity of 1,190. The Mianwali Central Jail has 1,986 prisoners against a capacity of 1,050. The Faisalabad District Jail has 2,414 prisoners against the capacity of 853. The Jhang District Jail has 1,695 prisoners against a capacity of 916. The Sargodha District Jail has 1,974 prisoners but it has capacity of 563. The Shahpur District Jail houses 690 prisoners against the capacity of 292. The Toba Tek Singh District Jail has 791 prisoners against a capacity of 500.
The Multan New Central Jail has 3,057 prisoners but it has a capacity of 1,460. The Bahawalpur Central Jail has 2,626 prisoners against a capacity of 1,334. The Dera Ghazi Khan Central Jail houses 1,295 prisoners but it has a capacity of 582. The Bahawalnagar District Jail has 594 prisoners but it has a capacity of 347. There are 2,034 prisoners at the Multan District Jail against a capacity of 229. The Muzaffargarh District Jail has 721 prisoners against a capacity of 180. There are 743 prisoners at the Rahim Yar Khan District Jail but it has a capacity of 316. The Rajan Pur District Jail houses 257 prisoners against a capacity of 114.
