ATTOCK: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said here yesterday that the government would provide maximum concessions and facilities to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as they play an important role in the economy of the country.

He said the small and medium businesses serve as an engine of growth and play a significant role in promoting the economic activities in the economy of any country.

Addressing a delegation of businessmen from representing the Attock Chamber of Commerce and Industry here at the Prime Minister's House, the premier said the government has given numerous incentives through various policies to the business community.

It is now incumbent upon the businessmen and traders to avail these opportunities both to improve their businesses as well as overall economy of the country. He said free trade and competition has become the rule of the game that has been established through globalisation especially in the field of trade and commerce.

Beside induction of better technology to improve the quality of the products there is dire need to develop skills and adopt the international best practises. The businessmen, he said, can also use the services of SME Bank to further improve and expand their businesses.

He said the government will extend every possible assistance to improve the socio-economic conditions in Attock. The Industrial Estate being established in the area, he said, will give a boost to the local industry and trade.The development of infrastructural facilities including roads, electricity and communication, he added, will further facilitate to improve the economic conditions. The expansion of educational and health facilities, he mentioned, would directly benefit the social life of the district.

The delegation lauded the government's efforts to ensure availability of goods to the people through Utility stores. They also appreciated the quality of goods available at the Utility Stores and demanded opening of more stores in the District of Attock.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has complained about the flaws in the customs administration reform system, which delayed the clearance of iron and steel scrap.

This was stated by ICCI President Nasir Khan in a meeting with Member Customs CBR Shaid Rahim Sheikh here on Friday. He said that department is taking more than one week to clear the single description of iron and steel scrap. "Sometimes the customs officials enhance the value without any justification, just to delay the clearance. This delay resulting not only financial losses to importer but also a raw material shortage at production stage by the concerned industries,", the ICCI president said.

Khan mentioned that who was responsible for the payment of  the charges of port demurrages and container detention. He suggested to member CBR to make necessary arrangements to solve the problems.

The member customs assured that " care" system will clear all the import items in 48 hours. He said that CBR was implementing business friendly policies for the enhancement of Industrial culture. The member said the iron and steel scrap will be released in 48 hours.
