Owners of press and electronic main stream media are wealthy people and their business is primarily commercial. Through their respective newspapers and television channels, they project images and policies of political leaders who sponsor them and try to belittle those who do not eulogize them. Their main aim is to earn maximum; people at the bottom are not on their agenda.
Opinion and analysis carried in the newspapers are meant to please their political bosses. Mostly such work carries basic themes from foreign media. Sometimes in order to show off their wisdom they advise their favorite political leaders to follow certain course of actions for winning power battle without carrying out appreciation of all relevant factors. Recently some editors of main stream press media conveyed to Nawaz Sharif that situation in the country was ripe and opportune and asked him to come back home from exile. Being simple and straightforward person he followed the advice and as a result was doomed.
Media owners claim that media is the fourth pillar of the state. But in our country, media has not achieved anything beneficial to the masses nor did it strengthen unity of the people. They preach that freedom of speech and expression are fundamental rights of every citizen. But in their heart and mind they are against this principle. They follow their own criteria for publication of news and opinion concerning common man. They have done nothing except dividing nation into sections and creating hatred among them for each other. They themselves have no moral courage to face criticism. If some letter with material against their liking is dispatched, they do not publish.
Their correspondents at different cities and towns of the country mostly sent news items relating to activities of administration and political personalities with exaggeration either to please them or blackmailing them for their petty interests. They have never raised voice of oppressed people; they incline to side with influential people. Their reporting is biased.
The Frontier Post is an exception. I found it’s all staff brave and sincere in promoting values of positive journalism. Attock News is another site opened by some patriots, which is doing great service to people of Attock and keeping them updated with events taking place around. I wish them success.
In the general interest of people of Pakistan, owners of main stream media must carry out self appraisal and evolve suitable policies that may promote interest of common man and society through their newspapers and television channels. They must point out past failings and misdeeds of present political leaders’ trying to capture power through cutting deals among themselves and stress the need for bringing new, honest and capable leadership in the field to lead the nation. Service to people is service to God.
