Yassir Arafat Was a Living Legend

  Comrade Yasser Arafat symbolised the struggle of the Palestinian people for their homeland, for peace and freedom. He had stood up against all odds through more than four decades of struggle against the Zionist Israeli government and its armed forces backed by US imperialists, says the press release issued by the spokesman of the Communist Party of Pakistan, Engineer Jameel Ahmad Malik here today.

He said Comrade Arafat was a living legend. He was a great friend of Pakistan which stood by the Palestinian people’s struggle through all the vicissitudes. He was a source of inspiration for the worldwide struggle against imperialism. His death is not only a great loss to the Palestinian people, but Pakistan has also lost a great friend.

The Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP) pay their homage to the memory of Comrade Yasser Arafat and convey their heartfelt condolences to the Palestinian people and widow Soha Arafat and her daughter Zoha. The CPP reiterate their solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle in the turbulent days ahead.

Jameel Malik said that the death of Yasser Arafat is not only a significant moment in Palestinians' history but it is for all Muslims ummah too and the people all over the world still remembered that in his emotional appeal for a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in 1974, Arafat wore a holster while waving an olive branch.

Many Palestinians revered Arafat as the embodiment of their national aspirations, first in his role as guerrilla fighter and then as a peacemaker and a de facto statesman.

Engineer Jameel said that after graduating, Arafat moved to Kuwait and during his job as a civil engineer in Kuwait, Arafat continued to participate in Palestinian politics and organized his own guerrilla group, Fatah and afterwards, he provided indispensable leadership to a revolutionary movement and played a key role in forging a peace agreement with Israel in 1993, but as a revenge Comrade Yasser Arafat was confined to his Ramallah compound since 2001 and was also excluded from negotiations in recent years by the US President Bush and his administration, he concluded his condolence message with these remarks.

Engineer Jameel Ahmad Malik is the spokesman of the Communist Party of Pakistan.
