TAXILA: Scores of Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan's rural Sindh and the federally administered tribal areas bordering Afghanistan have poured into Gurdwara Panja Sahib, in Hasanabdal, to celebrate the three-day cultural festival Raksha Bandhan, commonly known as Rakhi.

The main Raksha Bandhan event to be held today at the Gurdwara Punja Sahib, Hasanabdal. During the celebrations, women and girls tie rakhi (a piece of thread) around their brothers' wrists.

The siblings pray for each other and the brother pledges to protect his sister and gives her a gift. After the ritual, they seek their parents and elders' blessings and visit relatives and friends to greet one another.

The festival takes place on a poornima (full moon) in the month of Shravan (belonging to the Hindu calendar) each year and Hindus and Sikhs jointly celebrate the festival at the Punja Sahib. "The Rakhi Festival is more of a cultural festival than a religious one and is celebrated in Pakistan and different parts of world with fervour and enthusiasm," a devotee from rural Sindh said.
