ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan delivered another big blow to President Prevez Musharraf on Thursday by ruling that as citizens of Pakistan, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother and political confidante, Shahhbaz, have the “inalienable” right to come back to their country, and that the government must not obstruct or hinder their return.

The seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary gave a short order after day-long arguments

and counter-arguments on two identical petitions by the brothers for direction from the Supreme Court to the government not to block their return to Pakistan.

The order was unanimous. For the second time in just over a month, a packed courtroom burst into applause after the order was read out, while outside, PML (N) activists who had gathered in strength shouted “Go Musharraf Go”, and “Wazir-e-Azam (Prime Minister), Nawaz Sharif”.

The state-run Associated Press of Pakistan quoted a government spokesman saying that the Supreme Court decision will be taken in its true spirit and action will be taken accordingly. “We will prove to the world that we abide by the law and Constitution and believe in tolerance and fairness,” the spokesman said.

Prison sentence

But Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sher Afghan Niazi indicated what might be in store for Mr. Sharif upon his return. Speaking in a television programme, he said if Mr. Sharif returns, he will have to serve out the remainder of his prison sentence that was remitted by the regime when he went into exile.
