Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s announcement he made early this week from Lahore about his candidature for next term PM slot has created stir in the ranks of the ruling alliance.

The federal cabinet is already divided on number of issues, and the prime minister’s assertion has created a new rift in their lines. The Lahore based leadership of Shujaat Muslim League has been planning to capture the post for its own nominee, but Shaukat Aziz’s aspiring another term has added worries to his League’s leaders. Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain hurriedly offered his version Wednesday, saying his Muslim League has not made up its mind for nomination of the candidate for the next term yet.

Sources told The News that President General Pervez Musharraf, who brought Shaukat Aziz in the government after taking over the reign of the power, despite the fact he developed likening for the Chaudhrys prefers to see Shaukat Aziz as prime minister even after 2007.

Shaukat Aziz always maintained cordial relations with the Chaudhrys, but he has been maintaining that his whole political elevation is because of President General Pervez Musharraf’s courtesy. He got introduction of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain when he assumed the office of the Finance Minister in early 2000, the sources said.

The sources are surprised over the contentious announcement since the ruling alliance is facing a number of much bigger challenges and after overcoming the same and grabbing majority seats in the National Assembly, the question of making the prime minister of their choice would come up. “The expression at this stage demonstrates over-confidence and in a way it sounds out of place and premature,” sources viewed the controversial announcement.

Prime Minister Aziz has already announced to contest the next election for the berth in the National Assembly from Attock, and he can win the election only after the blessing of Shujaat.

Meanwhile, sources hinted that Shaukat Aziz has been offered to contest for the National Assembly seat from Karachi by another ally of the ruling alliance. He was elected MNA from Attock and a rural seat in interior Sindh in 2003, but this time he is being tipped to be candidate from urban area of the province. He retained Attock seat and gave up Sindh one.

The incumbent members of the legislature who are not comfortable with the Chaduahrys could rally around Shaukat Aziz for their politicking within the ruling Muslim League. It is expected that the prime minister would be asked quietly to clarify his position with regard to his announcement in question by Shujaat League’s leadership soon.

President General Pervez Musharraf would not like to interfere assertively in the tangle at this stage since he is concentrating on the bigger ‘things’, the sources hinted.

The announcement made by Shaukat Aziz and discourteous response by Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain on this count has complicated the situation to the aggravated extent for the schemer of the ruling alliance, the sources concluded.
