bhamtwo.jpgSmethwick’s promotion hopes remain strong despite a frustrating winning draw at home to Newport.

The hosts’ overseas star Aniket Redkar scored 78 valuable middle order runs in partnership with Salim Ahmed (85no), before his off-spin took 5-31 against a Newport batting line-up more interested in surviving than trying to chase down their 278 target.

Their reply to Smethwick’s 277-6 closed on 124-6 after 55 overs, leaving third placed Smethwick 32 points behind leaders Attock.

Smethwick’s promotion chances were done no harm by a brilliant bowling performance from Penn against-second placed Old Elizabethans.

They skittled the high-flyers for 102 after being bowled out themselves for a below par 167.

Skipper Richard Bradford said Penn held a players’ meeting a few weeks ago and decided that if their batting unit could post scores between 160 and 180 their seam and pace attack would do the rest.

So it proved against Old Elizabethans, as Sandeep Dhillon hit a crucial 56 in 10 overs to nudge his side towards their total before Dipesh Patel (4-29), Richard Norgrove (4-27) and Danny Smith (2-48) got to work.

• Fordhouses’ status in the division looks perilous after they were thrashed by eight wickets by Dorridge.

Dorridge were not put under pressure in chasing down the 121 total the faltering Fordhouses batsmen had set.
