Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday took suo moto notice in various public interest/human rights cases.

In one case the Chief Justice directed to issue notices to the Balochistan chief secretary and the provincial police officer, and fixed the case in his chamber on August 15 on the issue of missing persons, particularly those belonging to Balochistan.

In another case, the chief justice called a report from Sindh IGP regarding the murder of Abdul Rehman, a resident of Berani, on the Chhachhro Tehsil of the Tharparkar district.

The father of the deceased has alleged that Abdul Rehman was murdered after being sodomised by Murad Ali Malkani, Dhani Bux Malkani, Ahmed Ali Nahri, and Ghulam Haider Samijo.

He further alleged that police were not taking action against the criminals.

He has appealed to the chief justice to provide him justice. The hearing of the case has been fixed for August 10. In another case, the chief justice called a report from the NWFP Chief secretary regarding flying and sale of kites despite the decision of the Supreme Court against kite flying. The hearing of the case has been fixed for August 10 in his chamber.

The suo moto action was initiated on a press report appearing in a local daily regarding sale of kites in Mardan.

Although the Supreme Court has banned the sale of kites in the area but the dealers have been continuing their business in Mardan.

Parents have asked the provincial and district governments to take strict action against those kites dealers and close their shops.

Similarly in an another case Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has directed to call report from the Attock district and sessions judge.

Sultan Mehmood, an under-trial prisoner at the Rawalpindi Jail, in a letter to editor has said that he was in the Attock Jail in a case. Later he was transferred to Rawalpindi Jail as a punishment because he had informed the Superintendent Attock Jail about the sale of drugs on the jail premises and demanded action against the culprits. As a consequence, he was transferred to the Rawalpindi Jail and was unable to appear in his case for the last three months.

He had requested for an inquiry into the matter, and appealed that he might be sent back to the Attock Jail to pursue his case.
