ATTOCK: Gold as a precious metal has always been attractive. People used to look for it on hills, springs, deserts, rivers and sea shores. But today some people look for it in the streets, drains and on the roads of Sarafa Bazaars, throughout the country.
Such is the position here in the Sarafa bazaar of Attock.
There are more than fifty jewellery shops here in the sarafa bazar. As soon as jewellery shops are closed , some people called "Niariay" come to bazaar with brushes and big buckets and start collecting the sand and soil of the bazaar. The purpose behind is to collect those golden particles which throughout the day fly during jewellers' routine work.
This is a source of livelihood for many people here in Attock. According to a careful estimate throughout the country more than 20,000 people are involved in this profession.
Pervez Masih, who is in this profession for the last 30 years told APP, that he comes daily in the evening or in the early morning and collects sand and soil and washes it in water and succeeds in collecting gold worth Rs 200 or Rs 300 daily and on average he earns Rs 6000 to 7000 per month. Mr Masih said, he feels no shame in doing all this as this is his profession and source of livelihood and is far better than begging or debt.
