| Attock my native city? (Part-1) |

“Attock gaya bhattak gaya” "Attock Giya Attock Giya" is the kind of the feeling I want to describe. In my opinion Attock has some kind of strange attraction for people.
I have seen a lot of people who had been posted to Attock and now they are settled here, having built or bought houses and property here. They include people of all categories e.g retired army officers, people working in banks, professors, school teachers, people working in different departments of government, businessmen and most importantly doctors who form the largest group amongst them. Attock city is like heaven for doctors. I know by name a number of famous doctors who had been posted in Civil Hospital or CMH whose private practice flourished so much that they resigned from their permanent jobs and made their private clinics and hospitals here.
So why is it so that people belonging to different parts of Pakistan get settled here and make Attock their second native city?
My grandfather Dr. M. Aslam Qureshi migrated from India at the time of partition. After that he spent a major part of his remaining life in Rawalpindi. Two of my three uncles (Chacha), who are in Pakistan are settled in Rawalpindi. The third one is abroad. But my father was posted to Attock from Lahore in 1990. Since then we are here. The reason being that Attock is a very good city for a person having a small income. My father managed to build his own house within four years of moving to Attock i.e by 1994 which in my opinion would never have been possible if he had been in Rawalpindi or in any other big city. He also managed to fund higher education for two of his three children, his own bypass surgery which also costs a lot and the wedding of my sister which took place in 2001. It was possible for my father to all that because he was living in a city where there were no extra burdens on him.
Attock city has a big advantage that all the amenities are within a short distance. You don’t have to use a car every time you have to go out for something. All the shops, offices and institutes are within a radius of three to four kilometers. You can go anywhere within the city easily on a bicycle. No rush hours, no traffic jams, nothing like that.
Attock is now flourishing and it has almost all the facilities of modern age. Now there are good educational institutes, colleges etc. where you can have good education upto the intermediate level. But for professional education you have to move out and even that is no problem if you are in Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Taxila or Abbottabad. You can come to Attock very easily on every weekend. I know many people who work in Rawalpindi and travel to work six times a week.
My Grandfather Dr. Ghulam Jilani Barque was one of the great persons of Attock city. When people asked him if it would have been better for him if he had lived in a big cultural center like Lahore , he would say then that his identity is due to Attock City. Same is the case with my father. He had been the Principal of the biggest college of Attock City. The respect he gained while living here is worth something.
