FFC seals flour mill in Attock for illegal transportationPDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 28 February 2008
ATTOCK: The Federal Food Committee (FFC) has sealed a flour mill in Attock for illegally transporting wheat flour.

FFC Chairman Lt-Gen (Retd) Farooq Ahmed Khan, without disclosing the name of the owner of the flour mill, said the mill was sealed and its quota suspended. The FFC also slapped a fine on the mill. Sharing another sad episode of the quality and standard of food items, the chairman said that there were no minimum standards with the Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).

“We have asked them to provide a list of food items to be included in the mandatory list to ensure food quality in the market,” he added. The chairman said the monitoring and regulation of wheat flour movement at the borders would continue in order to stabilise its prices in affected areas.

Briefing mediamen about decisions of the committee, he said the prices of flour in three provinces were stable while the situation in some parts of the NWFP was not comfortable.

“Grain is touching the price of gold,” he said adding that the commodity price in the country is not competitive one among the regional countries, however, he said FFC had no input in the announcement of wheat procurement price.

He also anticipated low strategic reserves for the coming year because the government had revised its procurement target from 7 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes. Giving larger share to the private sector in wheat procurement would also lead to manipulation like they did this year, he added. About the edible oil, the chairman said: “We are discussing the matter with the stakeholders and working out strategy for harmonization of commodity prices rather linking it with the international one.”

ATTOCK: The absence of medical facilities at the ongoing Inter Provincial Under-17 Football Championship, being played at the Punjab Stadium under the auspices of the Punjab Sports Board (PSB), is creating problems for the participating players.

According to details, Attock’s player Akhlaq was severely injured during a match against Lahore. Ironically, there were no first-aid facilities in the stadium. And after a delay of about half an hour, the injured player was taken to a hospital with the help of the ambulance provided by the Rescue 1122. It is pertinent to mention that the Punjab government has increased funds for the PSB recently but the utilisation of the grant is not visible for the betterment of the players. Sources close to the PSB have said that the Punjab Stadium is being used for private functions as well. “The stadium is constantly being used for the sports days organised by the local schools. Owing to this very reason, the training camps of the national football and hockey teams are badly affected,” sources said.

Saturday, 16 February 2008
ATTOCK: Attock Police have traced two alleged killers of a woman and recovered her decomposed body from a rented house near Sir Syed Chowk, Tipu Road, District Police Officer (DPO), Attock, Tariq Joya told reporters here on Saturday.

Nooul Ain, 22, went missing in January 2004 while living with her husband, Amir Wasim. The missing woman’s parents had lodged a complaint with the New Town police. Police had constituted a team to recover the women, but failed to trace her.

Noorul Ain had been employed at an advertising company and she had also worked as anchorperson in Pakistan Television (PTV). She went missing after three years of marriage.

Noorul Ain’s father, Qamar Abbas, told Daily Times that police could not trace his daughter, leaving him with no option but to move the Supreme Court of Pakistan in February 2007 for his daughter’s recovery.

He said the sacked Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had transferred the case investigation to Attock police and directed Attock District Police Officer (DPO) Tariq Joya to investigate the case. He said Tariq Joya investigated the case and found that Noorul Ain had been murdered by one Amir Wasim and his friend, Zubair.

Talking to reporters on the crime scene, Joya told reporters that accused Zubair was in jail on judicial remand in an abduction case. He said the investigating team scanned Zubair’s mails and found that he had mailed a message to Amir Wasim in which he threatened him with dire consequences for failing to give his money amounting to Rs 25,000.

In order to investigate the motive for the threat, police arrested Zubair and during interrogation he confessed to killing Noorul Ain with the assistance of Amir Wasim in 2004. He also identified the place where they had buried Noorul Ain’s body.

The DPO said the decomposed body of the deceased was recovered from Zubair’s house. He said preliminary investigations showed that the accused first strangulated Noorul Ain and later chopped her body and stuffed body pieces into a bag. He said the accused dug out a hole in the washroom and buried the bag there.

Addressing a public gathering at Attock, he said that all the heinous sins like deposing the judges of Supreme Court including CJ, illegally and unconstitutionally, martyring thousands of innocent citizens during the Lal Masjid operation, and illegal house arrest of National hero scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan would be reckoned.

Musharraf is trying to rig polls: Nawaz SharifPDF Print E-mail

Friday, 15 February 2008
ATTOCK: While campaigning is on in full swing for the general elections in Pakistan, doubts are already being raised over the transparency of the polls. Former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif alleges President Musharraf is trying to rig the polls.

At a rally in Attock, famous for a jail that once held Nawaz Sharif, the message is all too clear. If Zardari's rallies concentrate on the memory of Benazir, Sharif's rallies are all about Musharraf.

If Nawaz Sharif’s party does well enough in the elections, he may be able to dethrone the very man who ousted him in a coup.

While the PML-N leader insists it isn't personal, its obvious that he sees this election as a referendum on Pakistan's president, and a chance for revenge against the men who split his party to form the pro-Musharraf PML-Q. Sharif, who spent months in jail and years in Saudi exile, says it's a miracle his party has been able to spring back.

“I feel blessed that even after so many years, my party is still intact,” says Sharif.

Even though Nawaz Sharif leads the popularity stakes, according to surveys his party will fall way behind the PPP in terms of seats. Sharif says he's also sure that the government will rig the elections.

“Musharraf is rigging the elections and that is why he rejected my papers. It’s a contest between PPP and us. The q-league doesn’t figure in it,” says Sharif.

A day after Musharraf had promised to make the elections free, fair and transparent, the US-based Human Rights Watch claimed it had caught Pakistan's Attorney General, Malik Qayyum on tape saying that the upcoming parliamentary elections will be ‘massively rigged’.

For sometime now, there had been speculation that Musharraf will try to rig the polls in order to get his own people elected to power. However, the secret tape revelation now seems to confirm these suspicions.
