Musharraf vows march towards complete democracyPDF Print E-mail
Written by admin
Wednesday, 31 October 2007
President General Pervez Musharraf vowed to take the country forward towards the final phase of its {mosimage}  transition to complete democracy and warned those trying to create obstacles in the process.

"Unfortunately, some people are trying to create obstacles in this transition," President Musharraf said while inaugurating the 154 kilometre six-lane M-1 Motorway linking Islamabad with Peshawar.

The president said only a few months were left in completion of the third phase in transition towards democracy. "We will not let anyone create any obstacle in transition towards democracy," the president said.

He mentioned that in the first phase from 1999 to 2002, he was managing the affairs of the state while in the second five-year phase from 2002-2007, the parliament was fully functional and his role was confined to giving advice to the government.

President Pervez Musharraf said Pakistan was progressing rapidly in all areas of health, education and communications. He cited the example of national revenues that had swelled from Rs306 billion during 1988-99 to around a trillion, while the PSDP also grew from Rs80 billion to Rs520 billion during the same period.

He said with more projects in the pipeline, there were increased employment opportunities and lesser poverty. The president acknowledged that the increase in prices of everyday items was a heavy burden on the common man adding more effort was needed to check it. Pervez Musharraf termed the M-I project an important link in the northsouth corridor that was also creating a linkage between different provinces.

He recalled that the M-I was conceived in early '90s but due to lack of resources and sincerity the process was delayed. The government, he said, has a comprehensive plan to expand the country's road network and mentioned various new roads that were being planned or were under execution.

The president mentioned the 950 km long Gwadar to Iran road that will link up the Indus Highway, the RCD Highway, linkages to Afghanistan, China, Iran and Central Asia. He said road links between Chitral-Gilgit, Kaghan-Gilgit and Gilgit-Skardu were planned to increase trade and tourist traffic, besides improving communication between various regions.

Musharraf also directed enhancing the pace of work on the Chach and Col Sher Khan (Nishan-e-Haider) interchanges. He said there was also a need to initiate work on the Rawalpindi Bypass from Tarnol to Rawat to ease load of heavy traffic from the city.

He also agreed with the demand for initiating dualisation work on the Hassanabdal-Mansehra road and said it needs to be extended up to the Karakoram Highway for which there are also plans for expansion. The president earlier unveiled the plaque of the M-I section of the motorway near Swabi along the river Indus, bordering Punjab and NWFP.

HASANABDAL: An SHO and an elite force official received bullet injuries in a shootout with proclaimed offenders, wanted in kidnapping for ransom cases, in the early hours of Thursday.

The shootout took place near the Lunda Mera village, in the jurisdiction of the Hassanabdal police station.

Talking to newsmen here, the district police officer, Tariq Haneef, said the police arrested one member of an inter- provincial gang of kidnappers, Badar Muneer, a resident of Mardan, for his alleged involvement in a kidnapping for ransom case of a young boy, Adnan, a resident of the Kot Najeeb Ullah district Haripur.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused disclosed that other members of his gang, including Nazakat and his brother, Inyat, had abducted the boy and taken him to Sakha Kot, in the Mardan district.

He further said that “a deal” with the family of the abducted boy was underway. He told the interrogators that the gang members were hiding in their house in the Lunda Mera village, Hazara Road, near Hassanabdal.

On this information, a police party, headed by Attock Saddar SHO, Inspector Syed Shoukat Shah, along with a battery of the elite force, raided the hideout, which is in the jurisdiction of the Hassanabdal police station, around 3.00am on Thursday.

On seeing the police party, the outlaws opened indiscriminate fire on them. As result, Inspector Syed Shoukat Shah and a head- constable of the elite force, Azam, received bullet injuries.

The injured officers were brought to the POF Hospital, Wah Cantonment, for treatment and their condition was said to be stable.
