When was the last time that a judge, whether serving or retired and functional or non-functional, was accorded such a warm and emotional welcome in Pakistan? No other example comes to mind and thus drawing comparisons would serve no purpose. After being welcomed by huge crowds of lawyers, political workers and commoners in Sukkur, Hyderabad and Peshawar, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has not only become a trendsetter but has also introduced a new and largely unpredictable element in the country's politics.

One had to be at the Peshawar High Court premises to feel the kind of raw emotion that was on display the day Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry came on a visit. Those present were all fired up and ready to applaud anyone critical of the present set of rulers. The mood was rebellious and for the first time in years one got the feeling that frustration was giving way to hope. Nobody complained even though the wait for his arrival from Islamabad became longer and discomforting due to the heat and congestion. It took his cavalcade nine hours to reach Peshawar as one vehicular procession after another joined him on the way and slowed down his progress.

Such a huge and spontaneous welcome could be the envy of any politician. Political parties and politicians in recent years have seen the crowds dwindling at their public rallies and processions due to a host of reasons. Even popular parties and their leadership find it difficult to bring people out of their homes and workplaces and the fear of getting exposed forces them to hold public gatherings in crowded bazaars and squares rather than in open spaces and parks. Parties with religious roots have an edge as the Friday prayers provide their leaders a captive audience to hold public meetings and processions. Other parties, often lacking resources, struggle to bring people to their public rallies.

NCHD has completed this campaign in Rahim Yar Khan, Rajan Pur, Attock and Narowal. The campaign’s objective is to train at least one woman in every household to prepare homemade ORS. Child deaths due to diarrhoea could be prevented easily in households by adopting simple prevention methods.

NCHD is striving to reduce deaths resulting from diarrhoeal diseases by training women to recognise diarrhoea, its complications, dehydration, diarrhoea prevention methods and ORS administration and preparation by mixing salt, sugar and water. The ORS campaign is in progress in various districts of Punjab, Muzaffergarh and Layyah. More than 50 million subscribers across the country fell into confusion when a series of SMS messages beeped on their phones throughout the day and pushed the authorities and cell phone operators to come up with statements in an attempt to clam their subscribers.

“I received an SMS from my class fellow early Friday, which asked me not to attend call from Warid, Telenor and Ufone,” said Osama Ashab, 20, a third-year engineering student.

“And by 1700 hours I have 37 such messages from different my friends, class fellows, relatives and family members. I didn’t follow that but obviously forwarded those to at least 50 other people in my contact list.”

“The Akhand Path is usually arranged two days before and the Bhog Sahib, the completion ceremony, is on the morning of Baisakhi but in Karachi Akhand Path lasts for seven days,” informed Sameet Kumar, the Gayani (religious leader) of the temple.

He said that Baisakhi is not a grand affair in Karachi because most of the Sikhs travel to Thatta, Lahore or India where large-scale celebrations are held. “It is specially colourful in the villages where Sikh farmers celebrate the harvesting season by dancing on the fields,” he adds.

"President Clinton telephoned me five times and offered five billion dollars for not testing the nuclear weapons. I refused the offer for the integrity and security of Pakistan," he said in an interview.

The exiled Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief also claimed that President Pervez Musharraf had "fabricated" the story about the hijacking of a plane in which the general was returning to Pakistan "to hide his own mistakes".

Sharif said that he did not block the runway to prevent Musharraf's plane from landing in October 1999, just before the military coup in which the latter took power.

He said he had refused to sign the documents of his resignation and "suspension" of Parliament. "I was also asked to sign a document expressing my failure as prime minister and making an apology to the nation and Gen Musharraf," Sharif said.

"I will not like to become the second Shaukat Aziz," he said referring to the incumbent prime minister, adding that those who left him would not be accepted in his party.

"It would be like selling my conscience," a local daily quoted Sharif as saying.

Sharif, however, said the Pakistani government might have struck a deal with its Saudi Arabian counterpart for his exile. He said he was kept in a small cell for 14 months and treated like a "war prisoner".

"I was in the Attock prison when a Suadi man came and told me that a deal had been reached between the Saudi and Pakistani governments for my exile," he said.
